I have three computers, two with Win ME and a laptop w/
Win 98; Do I need to purchase three XP operating systems?
Or can I install from one disk or, purchase the access
codes separate for a different price then to purchase the
software separate for each device?

One license, one computer, the way it has always been with Microsoft
consumer operating systems since at least Windows 95.
If you want Windows XP on 3 computers, you need 3 licenses.

You can get licenses at a slight discount but you can usually find the
full version locally for less:

Each installation of Windows XP requires a different Product Key (license) that
you must purchase. Otherwise, Product Activation will fail.

Once you purchase another license (Product Key), you may install
Windows XP on another computer using the same CD but using the
new Product Key.

On the back of the Windows XP box, please read the statement
"For installation and use on one computer"
(see License Agreement for license terms).

To access the License Agreement on your XP computer, go to:

Start > Run and type: WINVER , and hit enter.

Then click on "End-User License Agreement".

You can also open XP's "Help and Support" and type: EULA
and hit enter. Click on "Questions and answers about the EULA".

The End-User License Agreement states quite clearly:

"You may install, use, access, display and run one copy
of the Software on a single computer...."

You can install one (1) copy of Windows XP on one (1) computer.
Additional installations requires additional licenses (Product Keys)
for each installation on a different computer.

If you buy a retail version, not an OEM one, yes you can buy
extra licenses (see
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/howtobuy/addlic.asp). But
it's not generally a good deal. The problem is that Microsoft
sells additional licenses at only a small savings over the list
price. You're almost certainly better off just buying complete
extra copies from a discount source.

You'll need to purchase a separate WinXP license for each computer
on which you install it.

As it has *always* been with *all* Microsoft operating systems,
it's necessary (to be in compliance with both the EULA and U.S.
copyright law http://www4.law.cornell.edu/uscode/17/117.html), if not
technically) to purchase one WinXP license for each computer on which
it is installed. (Consult an attorney versed in copyright law to
determine final applicability in your locale.) The only way in which
WinXP licensing differs from that of earlier versions of Windows is
that Microsoft has finally added a copy protection and anti-theft
mechanism, Product Activation, to prevent (or at least make more
difficult) multiple installations using a single license.

You can buy additional licenses, assuming you have a retail
license. Naturally, Microsoft cannot sell additional OEM licenses. Be
aware, however, that you'll probably pay more this way than you would
if you were to buy a second copy of WinXP from a discount retailer;
Microsoft will only offer you a 15% discount off their MSRP.

You need three licenses. And always have done, with the earlier windows
as well. While you can buy additional licenses, the price is
'recommended retail' less not much and it is usually cheaper just to buy
three at a discount store

Greetings --

Be
aware, however, that you'll probably pay more this way than you would
if you were to buy a second copy of WinXP from a discount retailer;
Microsoft will only offer you a 15% discount off their MSRP.

One license, one computer, the way it has always been with Microsoft
consumer operating systems since at least Windows 95.
If you want Windows XP on 3 computers, you need 3 licenses.

You can get licenses at a slight discount but you can usually find the
full version locally for less:

You need three licenses. And always have done, with the earlier windows
as well. While you can buy additional licenses, the price is
'recommended retail' less not much and it is usually cheaper just to buy
three at a discount store
