Hi folks,

I have a question. I recently bought a computer with windows xp on it. I had
read in a magazine that windows needs to be activated by phoning microsoft
or something like that. Ive had the computer for months now and I never
activated anything. The operating system works fine. Whats up?

TIA

Bill

This just means that the manufacturer activated it for you. If it hadn't been activated, YOU WOULD KNOW.

Preinstalled systems are generally pre-activated. You would only need to do
it if you reinstall at some point.

Greetings --

Pre-installed OEM operating systems are typically either
pre-activated at the factory or are BIOS-locked and do not required
activation as long as they're installed on the computer with which
they're sold.

The OS will let you know, with frequent reminders, if you do need
to activate. To check for yourself, Start > All Programs >
Accessories > System Tools > Activate Windows. Alternatively, Start >
Run > "C:\Windows\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /A." It will probably tell
you that WinXP has already been activated.
