windows xp pro "error checking"...

why when i run "error checking" my system halts after
completion reboot (i.e. i check to "apply" error checking,
os says click yes to schedule on the next reboot, i click
yes and manually reboot. program runs through it's
standard 3 stage scan, after completing it reboot one
final time to the os. at this point is where the system/os
hangs/haults.

please advise
