Hello, hello,
Got an XP machine, upgraded from 98 which after completing upgrade and doing
the final reboot it just hangs at the XP splash screen.
Things checked:
Memory, Processor (Athlon XP). No apparent issues.#
Any suggestion?Anyone?!!
regards.

Yes! Do a fresh install instead of an upgrade. But first, download "all" the
Windows XP drivers you are going to need for your hardware. Run the
compatibility wizard from the CD before you start the install.
Disconnect/remove any hardware that fails/has issues!

Crusty suggested a clean install and I would agree. Also read this:

And if you still have trouble, read this:

Windows XP is quite picky about RAM so check to be sure that you do
have compatible ram in your machine (ie that all ram chips match, in
other words don't mix single density dimms with double density dimms
as such configurations could cause problems). Also some USB devices
might cause your system to hang, this is especially true with some
picture card readers.
LASTLY DO NOT UPGRADE! Instead use a dos/win98 bootable disk and use
FDISK to delete all of your existing partitions. Then repartion to
your liking. Once you have created a fresh partition, go into your
machine bios setup and under boot up options indicate the CD Rom drive
as your first boot device. Insert your windows xp disk in the drive,
reboot (note that you'll have to hit any key on your keyboard for xp
to boot from cd rom).
From this point, use windows xp to format the partition. The two
options you can/should use are: Format using NTFS file system (QUICK),
or Format using NTFS file system. The major difference between these
two different format types are the times involved to format the drive.
Upon completion/successfull windows xp installation you should have a
perfectly working system. If your system still hangs, then you have a
hardware problem (again check the ram, check your add on cards).
Windows XP is by far the most reliable microsoft operating system to
date, but a clean/new install is always the recommended method to
avoid problems such as the one you mention.
Good Luck!
