View Full Version : Removing startup application

I recently installed an app that automatically starts up
whenever I boot my machine and places an icon at the
right-hand end of my task bar. I want to keep the app
but don't want it to start up every time I start up my
machine. I'd also like to remove the icon from the
taskbar. I've attempted to accomplish this by going to
documents and settings/user name/start
menu/programs/startup ... but there's nothing in the
folder (and there are other apps that do start up with
every boot, as I'd like them to; I don't understand why
they aren't there). Any suggestions?
Tnx.

You might try this: Click Start/Run and type msconfig and OK. On the Startup
tab, uncheck the items you dont want to start on logon.

Jon S,

The first thing to try is an option in the program to disable it from
activating at startup. If there is no option for disabling, then visit the
following site for program startup locations and how to stop them;

Did you look for a menu item that removes that application from the task
bar? That is the easiest way to remove it.

Otherwise, run msconfig.exe and go to the Startup tab to disable it from
starting up.

Greetings --

In most cases, one need only open the offending program and
deselect the option to "display icon in the system tray" or to "start
when Windows starts."

Failing that, you can use Start > Run > MSConfig to temporarily
turn off the automatic startup of these programs. MSConfig will also
show you where the commands starting these programs are originating,
so that you can permanently eliminate the source of your irritations.
Look in the C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start
Menu\Programs\Start Up and C:\Documents and Settings\username\Start
Menu\Programs\Start Up folders, and in the system registry, primarily
in the HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run and
HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run keys.
