We're well aware of what's on that screen - we need some more information.
Do you see any errors at all? Or does it just attempt to load and then
returns to the menu screen? This is why I prefer to do a clean installation,
rather than an in-place upgrade, it saves time in the long run. If you have
anything on that drive that you wish to save, then you may have to place it
in another system as a slave, and salvage what you need onto a CD-R. Then
replace it back in your system, cable it up and place the Windows CD in the
drive, making sure that it's set to be the first boot device in the BIOS.
When you boot from the CD, make sure you choose the option to completely
format the drive (a slow, rather than a quick format) and that you choose to
convert to NTFS (again this is just my opinion, but I have found that XP
runs much better from an NTFS formatted drive), and reinstall Windows from
scratch, inserting your 98 CD when prompted.
Yes, I know this isn't what you wanted to hear, but it's by far and away the
best way to ensure all traces of the older OS are eradicated.

You should be eradicated. Would you like Dr. Jack Kevorkian's phone number?
