When I saved website URLs to my desktop, they used
to have special icons appropriate for each site. Now
all the icons are just the big "e". How do I get they
various icons back?

Those 'Icons' are stored in your Temporary Internet Files folder, which are
deleted when you do Disk Cleanup.
The secret is to grab them from that folder immediately, paste them
elsewhere (I have a folder called Icons) & go to your shortcut, Properties,
change icon, then point it to that location.

Hi Dick,
These are sometimes known or referred to as favicons.ico (Favorite Icons)
and they normally will only last until your Internet Explorer Temp files are
cleared.
This program will allow you to save the favicons.ico (Favorite Icons)
permanently in a different folder and re-associate your favorites with the
stored icons.
FavOrg - Restore and Save Favorite Icons (Line 108)

Workaround:
Navigate to the Temporary Internet Files, and drag the icons to the desktop
and rename them to whatever name you like.
Create a folder called Icon Selection. Move all of the renamed favicons to
this folder placed in the root directory of C. Right click on the Icon,
select Browse and navigate to your Icon Selection folder. Choose the
renamed favicon and click ok. These icons will be permanent.
When you right click on an icon, select browse and navigate to the Icon
Selection folder. Choose the renamed favicon you want and click ok. Your
customized icons will be permanent.

I installed the FavOrg program and ran it by clicking
on GO. However, none of my desktop web icon
links were changed from the "e". What else do I need
to do?

Did you follow my instructions? (which is basically also the explanation
given by Kelly)

I am not sure. The program listed all the icons on my
computer and went to the site of each one to find the
appropriate icon. But I guess I haven't "re-associate your
favorites with the stored icons". Did you say how to do that?

Yes - repeat & rephrased.
Those 'Icons' are stored in your Temporary Internet Files folder, which are
deleted when you do Disk Cleanup.
The secret is to grab them from that folder immediately, as soon as you
create the shortcut and before you do a disk cleanup.
Go to Windows Explorer/Documents & Settings.
Expand "your user name" folder/Local Settings/Temporary Internet Files.
In there somewhere, you will find the icon identical to your shortcut.
Copy & paste it elsewhere (I have a folder called Icons) & rename it if you
like, as the original will be called 'Favicon'.
Then go to your shortcut, Rt-Clk on it/Properties/change icon, then point it
to the new location of that new, relocated icon.

Thanks. I guess I knew how to do all that and was looking for
some way to fix the windows Xp problem of using the
temporary internet folder. I thought Kelly's program called
FavOrg - Restore and Save Favorite Icons (Line 108)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
was supposed to help, but so far I can't figure out how it
helps.

Am I supposed to open properties for each link and
browse to the FavOrg files to select the icon manually?
