BlankI log on to control panel, select task scheduler, and schedule a task
(defrag for example)
However, the task won't start. Task scheduler is running in services and is
set to automatic. I have my system setup so that I don't need a password. I
would appreciate any suggestions.

Blankchange the system to make use of a password and it will work fine.
you can download and install TweakUI from MS and use it to auto log you on to eliminate the frustration of doing it yourself.

Hi Donald,
Follow the steps here depening on XP Home or Pro:
For Pro: Start/Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Local Security
Policy/Local Policies/Security options. In the right hand pane (third down).
Accounts: Limit local account use of blank passwords to console logon only.
This is enabled by default, disable it.
For Home: Run Scheduled Task without a Password (Line 67)

If that doesn't help and it should:
Go to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application
Data\Microsoft\Crypto\RSA\S-1-5-18 and delete the files in there.
Scheduled Tasks will recreate the files needed.
Note: This folder is hidden by default. Go to Start/Run and type in:
control folders. View: Show hidden files and folders.
