View Full Version : hard disk to hard disk exact copy

I am furious with Microsoft for now providing a perfectly
operating disk to disk backup system as part of Windows
XP Home. True, I was able to download the Backup program
that normally is supplied only with Windows XP Pro, but
when I used that program, I found that it only copied
half of my C: drive onto my D: drive --- making it
essentially useless for me. And what about Restore? I
have been told that the Restore function does not work
with Windows XP Home??? The copying of one hard drive to
another is now commonly used by average computer owners.
I expect that feature when I purchase an operating
system. And one final point, why doesn't Microsoft offer
a special priced download which will upgrade Windows XP
Home to Windows XP Pro? Is there anyone out there? WK

MS haven't obtained the licence to do that. Whoever told you Restore doesn't
work with Home is talking out his rear orifice. Why do you "expect that
feature" when it's never been part of any MS OS to date?
You need to purchase either Drive Image (www.powerquest.com) or Ghost
(www.symantec.com).
They do offer an upgrade - you'll find it on the shelves in all good
software stores in a snazzy blue box marked 'Microsoft Windows XP
Professional Upgrade'.

You are? Would your gormless brain be appreciative if they "didn't provide
one?

This is simply a case of "operator error"! But considering your exposed PC
abilities, maybe half is the best you can use.

You ****witted pillock! Restore is a feature of any version of XP, unless
you got the pirated kind. It sounds to me that you ****ed your OS into a
cocked hat!

You are a very dim bulb, as one doesn't download an OS from MS. This makes
it sound as if you got yours from a unreliable pirating program, as you even
stuffed that one up too. Otherwise, what you say you want, is easily
purchased as an upgrade at any vendor/PC store that sells Microsoft
operating systems; if you'd only get off your lazy arse to get it.
Now go skewer your arse with hot iron!

I assume you mean "not" providing rather than "now" providing?
If so, why would you be furious about it, MS has never included a hard drive
imaging program with their OS.
There are several good 3rd party programs out there that will do that job.
The Backup program supplied with XP is not a hard drive imaging program, nor
meant to be.
System Restore works just fine with Home as it does Pro, I have used it
successfully with both versions. Again though, Restore is not meant to be
any sort of backup program or hard drive imaging program, it is simply a
snaphsot of your system settings you can roll back to should something go
awry.
Yes, the copying of one hard drive to another is becoming more common with
the larger and cheaper hard drives available these days, I image mine at
least once a month. But I use a program I purchased just for that function,
Drive Image 2002.
