Hi everyone.

Upfront, could not find answer anywhere on MS site to
following:

When installing new software advised to close system
tray. In WinXP, this would be the taskbar notification
tray. How do I close this? My only guess is to close
taskmgr.exe in Task Manager. Am I correct?

Also, after I download a program, when I install it,
will it automatically be added to logged into Add/Remove
Programs in Control Panel? Not said well, but you know
what I mean.

Many thanks,
Janis

Janis,

are you sure the software asks you to close the "system tray" ? I
have never heard of that before; usually, installation programs ask
you to close "all open programs".

taskmgr.exe is the task manager applet itself, not the system tray,
which runs as part of Explorer in XP.

Installed programs *should* add themselves to the add/remove programs
list. Programs using the Windows Installer always will, some of the
others will not - it depends on the installer used and on the
programmer's choice of options.

Gerhard,

Norton's SystemWorks manual says to close all open
programs 'including' the items running in the system
tray. Maybe this just applies to previous versions of
Windows since I can't find anyway to close them. So I
assume that these icons running will not adversely affect
any installation?

I went with SystemWorks because I wanted the CleanSweep
Program which, when enabled, will log in all installs if
enabled. In Win95 it did a great job. The support people
at Norton 'think' it will log in a download install since
they're all such techies, that none of them (need to) use
the program they support. Go figure.

No, you don't want to close the System Tray. I think you may have
misread the advice, which was more likely that you should close
all *programs* running in the system tray (as well as any
others).

How to close a program running in the tray depends on the
program, but you can often right-click on it and find an option
to close it.

Generally yes, but not necessarily. It will be added only if the
program comes with an appropriate uninstall program.

Janis,

that's a different thing altogether. You need to close not one
"systray program" but each program that displays an icon there. Most
programs will have an exit ot shutdown option if you right-click the
tray icon, others may have to be shut down from a corresponding
application window. Some items may not represent programs at all; for
example, you may have a speaker icon that will start the volume
controls or you may have a connection icon for your LAN or dial-up
connection. Such items can remain without a problem for any other
program.
