This is very frustrating...I am trying to hide this
persistant icon for my cable modem that I will never
unhook. I have tried right clicking in the notification
area, but their is no choice to disable it. When I go in
to taskbar and right click, "Customize Notifications..."
is greyed out. If anyone knows another way to disable
it, please let me know. I am running winXP Home SP1.

Right click the taskbar, choose properties
Choose "Hide inactive icons" and then customize
Change the behavior for the icon to "never show"

ok that's not too bad, but I still wish I could
completely get rid of the icon. It has no purpose for
loading everytime I startup.

Thanks for your help,
Nick

Nick,

Is this icon, 2 little monitors that you get like for a standard lan
connection, is it peculiar to the manufacturer of the cable modem ?
Have you tried in control panel/network connections,

Right click the connection and select properties, then untick "show icon in
notification area when connected"

No its not the lan notification. It's the safely remove
hardware icon. I cannot find a way to get rid of the
icon for good.
