I am using IE v6.0 and Windows XP. I can't for the life of
me figure out how to get an IE icon in the taksbar for
ease of use. I have one in quick launch from the start
menu but would like to have one in the taskbar tray as
well. Any help greatly appreciated.

right click on an empty area of your taskbar.
point to toolbars
click on quick launch.
if you already have this enabled, you can look for any ie icon in your
computer and right drag this to the quick launch area of the task bar...then
make shortcut here.
that should do it.

The tasktray is an area for running programs only. The designers of the
software create a special part of the program to run in that area.
Because of this, it is not possible to place a shortcut into the task tray
as it is not a program, it only launches a program. If you really want a
shortcut down there, the closest thing that i could think of would be to
download a quick launch application that sits in your task tray and upon
right clicking its icon, it would present you with a menu of custom
shortcuts.
I have also heard of programs that will minimise a running program to the
task tray. This however would require IE to be running and can use up system
resources.

Do you mean Taskbar or Systray ? It should be on former if active. Latter
requires a special program. Saw name on alt.os.windows-xp, but no longer up
on there.

Hi, Rob.
We seem to have some confusion here. Confusion as to which name means what
on that line that typically sits at the bottom of our display. Since the
Taskbar is highly customizable, yours may be different, but this is how it
is most often:
The entire strip along the bottom of the screen is the Taskbar, although we
usually mean only the middle section when we say "Taskbar".
Left-to-right, we have the Start button, the Quick Launch toolbar
(optional), the Taskbar, and the Notification Area - which most of us still
call the System Tray, or SysTray, for short.
The Quick Launch toolbar, as its name suggests, can be used to hold icons
for programs that we want to be able to launch quickly, no matter which
application(s) we may be running. We can see and click on these icons
without clearing everything off the Desktop.
The Taskbar shows programs that are currently running. Clicking on any box
here should bring that program to the front - or minimize it if it is
already in the foreground.
The SysTray shows SOME programs that are currently running. Some apps put
icons here; some don't. Many of these icons are for programs that are
running in the background. Clicking on the icon seems to launch the
program, but that program has been running all along. This is especially
true if the program was launched as soon as Windows started, perhaps because
the application is in the Startup folder. (From the Run prompt, run
msconfig.exe to see all the programs that get started every time you boot
your computer; you may want to stop some of them from running.)
The SysTray (Notification Area) can be customized. You can set those icons
to Always Show, Always Hide, or Hide when Inactive. Right-click on this
area (the Clock is a good spot) and choose Customize Notifications...
If you get more confused or want to learn more about all this, just check
the WinXP Help and Support File. Microsoft went to a lot of trouble to make
sure that this WinXP version is much better than previous Help files.

The system tray has icons for *some* minimized running programs.
In general, the only applications that go into the system tray
are those that were especially written to do so. However there
are some freeware/shareware programs available that let you
minimize any program to the tray.
