i am transferring files from my desktop to my laptop. I
burned my word, excel, and image files form my desktop to
a cd-rw. I now would like to burn those files onto my
laptop hardrive. Since i've done this before and
recently, i would like to only copy the updated and
modified files from the cd to the laptop drive. I don't
want to answer the prompt that pops up when the file
already exists. My Roxio cd burner software was able to
burn only the files fom my desktop to the cd-rw that have
been changed and modified. Can windows do the same when I
take the files from the cd to the laptop.

You can do this with the Synchronize command in the Total Commander
(http://www.ghisler.com/).
