Technically you need to delete the copy of xp on your old
laptop. However, if it is 'toast' then i can't see how
you can do this. If you buy a new laptop surely XP will
be installed? Should you really want to install XP Pro on
your new laptop you will probably find that when you come
to activate your copy it will not activate because it
will assume, rightly, that you are installing it on two
machines, i.e., your old laptop and your new laptop. To
actiavte you are going to have to call the microsoft
activation line. When you attempt to activate all the
telephone details will be available on screen (assuming
you get a refusal online) You will also need the code
number quoted on screen too to pass onto the activation
person. At this stage simply explain that your 'old'
laptop died and that the copy of xp on that machine has
been removed and you want to install it on your new
machine.
As for registration, it is the software that is register
not the machine you put it on, so there is no need to de-
register or re-register.

Hope this helps
