I need to change the BIOS settings for my parallel port.

Dominic ,

This depends on the PC and manufacturer of the BIOS.
See the manual for how to enter your BIOS.
You may also see a prompt when the machine boots that may say something like
"Press DEL to enter Setup" or it may mention some other key to press.
Also check the PC vendors website for this kind of support information.
This is not a Windows XP issue.

If you don't know how to get into the system's BIOS, the easiest way to to
force a keyboard error. To do so, hold down a key while powering on the
system. A message should appear shortly noting that a key is stuck. A
message should also appear to press a specific key to enter the system's
BIOS.

To do what, out of interest?
Is this an EPP/SPP setting for a scanner per chance?

How to get into your BIOS depends, not on Windows, but on what
motherboard/BIOS you have. One common way is to press the Del key
when you first power on, but that's not necessarily right for
your computer. Watch the screen carefully when you first boot;
there's often a message there telling you what to do. If not,
check your system documentation or check with your vendor.

Or just try the Del key. There's a good chance that's correct for
you.
