View Full Version : Strange XP Annoyances

I am having strange problems with XP Pro on a new box I
just built. Now,I am unsure if it has to do with the new
motherboard, the hardware environment, or XP itself, but I
don't know where to start, so here goes...

I built a dual Xeon 2.4, 2gig ram. The MB is an Asus PP-
DLW.

Probably the simplest quirk is what I will bring up now.
MSN Messenger refuses to load most of the time, crashing
before it even shows the first dialog. On occasion it
will start on the 3rd or 4th execution. Now, messenger is
NOT of vital concern, but I want to find out what's wrong,
ya know? Is there anyone out there that may be able to
help?

I'm so used to having problems with hardware dependant
stuff that safe mode never crossed my mind!

It seems to work fine in safe mode.

Which suggests it's software related, maybe?

OK, as opposed to a direct hardware problem is the point i was making, given
that you were concerned it might be hardware related.
If something works in Safe Mode, then there's a good chance, not 100%, but a
good chance it's software bore.

Maybe i won't try and help you in future if all you wish to do is make fun
of my answers?

I was kidding, but if I offended ya, I'm sorry.

The thing is, I have another problem which is probably
hardware related, but may be the catalyst of the other
problems. It seems that my TV Capture card's (Hauppauge
WinTV, 33 MHz PCI in the MB's
[http://usa.asus.com/prog/spec.asp?m=PP-DLW&langs=09] only
33 MHz PCI slot) TV program has intermittent and
unrecoverable freezes, and always freezes when shutdown.
Then, windows refuses to kill the process. The restart
takes forever, causing me to hit the reset button if I
have something really important pending.

Since this may be a hardware thing that touches on all of
the quirks I am having, this would be the wrong forum to
ask for help, but both Hauppauge and Asus have yet to
offer any word two weeks thus far, and there seems to be a
possibility that it *is* a WinXP thing to me. I really
don't know.
