View Full Version : OE and spam filtering

I have read a few articles about OE settings to reduce or eliminate spam but
unless I have missed a detail
(and I definitely may have) these filters only affect how incoming mail is
handled AFTER it has been downloaded from my ISP's mailserver. I resent the
fact that I must waste any bandwidth at all on spam if I can avoid it. Can
OE be set to delete mail from the server without first downloading it,
according to user-defined filters? Or is a third-party tool like
MailWasher, for instance, required for such a job?

I am using Outlook Express 6 (6.00.2800.1123) on WXP Home.

Many thanks,

Ian.

I think there is a setting to delete from the server when filtered. I gave
up after a while and got Mailwasher which does a great job.

Yes, but the filters won't necessarily be effective, and you may
not be able to filter on words in the body (and if you can, you'll
have to "waste your bandwidth" on it anyways. Go to Tools->
Filters->Mail, and create a new filter with the action set to
delete the mail from the server.

I would persaonlly recommend a third-party app if you want your
spam to be blocked effectively. I prefer POPFile. Even MailWasher
downloads at least part of the e-mail before classifying it, and I
find it to be unreliable in detecting spam.

Just my two cents.
