I recently updated to beta SP2 and the Security Advisor
tells me that my Symantec Norton AV 2004 is installed but
not giving status; although the virus defs are 7/26/2004.
Is there a known fix for this?

Not until the final relaes. Just disable the Anti-Virus option in XP
security advisor.

Michael;
That is entirely up to Symantec.
Some AV program manufacturers are waiting for the final release of SP
2 before making the necessary updates.
