If drop shadows are turned on the desktop text displays white with black
shadows. You can turn off drop shadows in System properties> Advanced>
Performance> Visual Effects. Uncheck the box to "Use drop shadows for
icon lables on desktop."

The desktop text will then be able to display in white or black - which
one depends on your choice in Display> Appearance> Advanced. Selecting a
dark color for the Desktop item results in white text. Black text will
be used if you select a light Desktop color.
