Win xp network set up Wizard

I am using,AT&T cable modem,with SMC Router,connected with
Cat-5.I have a Desktop with WinXP and a IBM laptop with
Win 98 upgrade,both are connected to router.After I set up
Network wizard on Desktop with Win XP then try to install
on Laptop I get a,"Check Network Hardware",it refers me to
Help and support which is on Desktop WinXP.Is problem on
Desktop or Laptop or both?
