There is a folder on my windows xp machine located at
c:\program files\xerox\nwwia which is empty but can not
be removed (without using "safe mode"). Both the xerox
and the nwwia subfolder are empty.
What are these folders? Are they part of some trojan or
backdoor program?

Hi, Mark.
The \Program Files\Xerox folder is legit. It's required by some license
agreement between Xerox and MS, apparently. I also have xerox\nwwia, but no
idea what it could be for. I don't know what would happen if you delete
either of these folders.
That question gets asked in the newsgroups from time to time. I've
forgotten the explanation, but the experts seem to agree: ignore it.

You're right. It's part of the software for Windows Image Acquisition,
meaning scanners and digital cameras.
