Recently installed XP home edition and no 'empty recycle
bin' icon is on the desktop. How do I add this?

There has been a known issue (by design) that when the OS (XP
Professional/Home) is installed, some or all of the icons don't show up. A
recommendation would be to first select to arrange all icons by "Name, Size,
Type or Modified". Doing so will at least force the icons to show. Also,
make sure that the option "Show Desktop Icons" is enabled.

That sounds like the Start menu Message, you need to
decrease the amount of "Frequently used programs" in the
properties. Right click the Task bar or Start button and
snoop throuhg there you'll find what you need.
