I have some old dos games and I am wondering if I can play them on an XP
machine. If so, what steps must I take in order to make them work?
Thanks

Hi Steven,
Many of them will work, just run them from the command prompt (start/run =
cmd). If you need to create certain system settings, use the =
environmental variables section of system properties/advanced tab. You =
may also be able to use the compatibility wizard under =
start/programs/accessories as well. Programs that require direct =
hardware access generally do not work.

Some may work; others may not. Nobody can answer your question
more specifically if you don't tell us what the games are.

The games are the "Eye of the Beholder" series by SSI.

Hi Steven
Eye of the beholder should work although you may need to use VDM Sound
https://sourceforge.net/projects/vdmsound/ to get sound in the game.

DOS as an operating system, allowed programs to interact with the
hardware directly. So a developer might call a function like Int 21h,
to access the hard drive (I have no idea if this is the right one - it
has been a LOOOOONNNNGGG TIME). Windows does not allow this as much,
and in XP it is not allowed at all. To access a hard drive in Windows
a developer must call a WIN API function to access a hard drive.
