It keeps coming up in Windows Update. One of the only things I haven't
installed yet. I just want to know if there are any known issues or if
it going to affect my system in any other way before I install it. Thanks.

Windows Media Player 9 is a really cool application. It has to be installed
separately, but it's well worth it if you use your computer for media stuff.

How is it compared to the free RealOne player?

It doesn't install spyware on your PC, and it doesn't lock my computer up.
Much.

I'll say that much for WMP.

my xp-home notebook came with wmp8 last year. a couple of months
ago i downloaded wmp9 and installed it. no problems; it works
flawlessly. i did throw away the wmp8 database and let wmp9
import the my music directory again in one batch.

i'm very pleased with features like cross fade and srs
wow/trubass. wmp9 handles its library faster than wmp8.

Fortunately, it's never locked up my computer, so that's not a problem.
Regarding spyware, is it just that "anonymous user statistic" thing?

If you really want an unbiased answer to your question, I would recommend
looking at the various problems people have had with WMP9. If you have any
of the hardware that have caused problems (creative soundblaster live mp3
codec is not compatible with WMP9 - causes playback speed issues with MP3's)
& you are happy with your current media player, then no. I would not
upgrade. If you do want to upgrade, then ensure that you have system restore
switched on - just in case.
Regards.

Strange, I have Creative Soundblaster and WMP9 installed on 3 computers and
all are working just fine.
No playback issues with MP3s of any kind.

Yep. just search for ctmp3.acm, or look at
http://www.nwlink.com/~zachd/pss/pss.html#wmp9
& scroll down to Audio questions. It is covered there.

In the past I've wondered about that. But when you encode a file with
Producer, and view it on your own machine, and it doesn't have any urls or
anything else that would give one a reason to think there would be any
server-performance issues to report, and you've deselected the option to
report connection information - and STILL it spends a lot of time sending
SOMETHING to (Real?) via the connection it opens up... Well, it's annoying
at best.

Combine that with:

* the way Real pimped independent musicians some years ago, and required
them to be using a RealServer just to be considered for a "Born on the Web"
contest/listing;
* serreptitious placement of AOL icons, links and whatnot during
installation (until too many people in the press cried "foul");
* ongoing conning of new users (via confusing links on the site) into
thinking they had to buy the Real player, when all they were looking for was
the "free" player;
* degraded sound quality on http streamed RealMedia files, as opposed to
that served up by RealServer-targeted ones;
* much better sound quality with Windows Media encoding (no nasal flanging
for instance)...

Well, that's worse than annoying. It's a reason not to encode your work in
Real's format at all, anymore.

Now if MS could only detach all the "media management" bloatware from the
simple player, I'd be okeydoke. I'm still wondering when WMP is going to
have an onboard scheduler that's as difficult to use as Outlook's. It seems
only like a matter of time. (and no, "use the 6.4 player" isn't an
excusable alternative).

Thanks for the info. I'll be trying out WMP8 for a while, to see which I
like. (I definitely like the skins.)

I do not use SoundBlaster products any more. They have all caused
problems since the Live.
