View Full Version : Annoying "Messenger Service" popups

Fraser
April 5th 03, 07:13 PM
Hi there,
Can anyone help me get rid of an annoying "Messenger Service" (not MSN)
thing that seems to have installed itself on my computer? Whenever I'm
online, I get these frequent "Messenger Service" popups appearing on the
screen telling me about obscene or just crap websites that I have no
interest in. I don't know whether clicking on the "OK" or "X" icon sends a
signal to a server somewhere, but I presume this must actually be a piece of
software on my computer that there must be some way of getting rid of.

Anyone have any ideas how I can remove it? I'd be very grateful, as it's
starting to become very frustrating!

Thanks a lot
Fraser

Open Help and Support and search for "firewall". This will tell you how to
enable XP's built in firewall. If you have a valid reason not to use a
firewall, click Start, Run and enter SERVICES.MSC Locate the Messenger
entry and double click it. Set it to Stopped and Disabled.

However, the reason they can get to the Messenger Service (not to be
confused with Windows Messenger) in the first place, is that your internet
connection is not secure.

Hi Fraser,
To stop these messages you can either install a firewall on your system or
disable the messenger service on your computer.
To disable the messenger service go to Start > Run and type Services.msc
You will now be presented with a list of services on your computer, move
down the list until you see 'messenger'. Double click on this, and set
Messengers Startup type to disabled and stop the service if it is running.

Clicking Ok on a message does not send any information back to the sender of
the message. This is a part of Windows which is suposed to be used by
administrators to send messages to workstations.

The default for Windows Messenger is to start with Internet Explorer and
Outlook Express. You can turn off Windows Messenger temporarily by going to
Start, Run and typing "net stop messenger" but you will have to do this
every time Windows XP starts. If you try to uninstall Messenger this will
remove Outlook Express. What to do if you want to uninstall Windows
Messenger but keep Outlook Express? I found the solution at
http://www.ashampoo.com with PowerUp XP. This utility will edit the
registry to start Outlook Express or Internet Explorer without the Windows
Messenger. Then Windows Messenger can be safely removed.

Windows Messenger and the Messenger Service are two entirely different
things. This person need only to go into Services and disable Messenger to
stop these annoying messages :-)
