View Full Version : Major SP2 uninstall problems

Okay - I'm having major problems. I've attempted to uninstall SP2
(2600) from my previously SP1 machine. At the end of the uninstall,
when the text said "copying xp.res" or something vaguely similar, my
PC ran out of virtual memory and the uninstall process terminated,
saying something like:
"The application %1 failed to uninstall"
I have tried system restore from safe mode but it says that system
restore is unable to protect my computer. I have tried re-running the
uninstall process from both safe and regular mode, but it just sits
there on "Inspecting Current Configuration".
My computer has no start bar, no entries in network connections and is
so slow as to be useless.
I have no back up (I know this is stupid) and I can't log on to the ms
beta newsgroups, so I'm posting here...
Any help would be very much appreciated...

Hi
There are News Groups specific to SP2 - you might like to try those:

I would immediately at least backup any user data - i.e., files/work you've
created.
Sounds like it'll boot - can you use Windows Explorer to simply copy files
to your floppy? If you've got files that won't fit on a floppy [and really
don't want to lose them], you could get another hard drive and copy to it.
If the OS won't support copying files, you could use a DOS boot disk. If
your system is formated NTFS, you could boot off the XP install disk and use
the copy command in the recovery console.
A repair install might work - but before you try it, wait a bit to see if
someone else adds a post. It could actually be a bad idea [of course, you
might not have any other options]
Net - do whatever you need to do to 'backup' any critical work files. You
can always do a fresh install if necessary.
HTH.

So you installed test software, and now are complaining that things
aren't working the way you hoped? What did you expect when you
installed BETA software on your system?

Alpha/Beta - things don't work as advertised - you installed WinXP SP2
RC2 Beta - now when you uninstalled it don't work - Standard Operating
Procedure (SOP) - it's BETA.
