I shut down my win xp pro computer with the power button,
and now windows will not start. I get the xp start screen
but it stalls before compliton. I've tried all the F8
options, and all I get are system 32 file list with no
Dos Prompt. When I use the xp CD disk to recover safely,
the only option I get is to reformat the hard drive. I'm
tring not to have to do that. Can anyone help?

See "How to Start System Restore Tool From a Command Prompt in Windows
XP" (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=304449). If this does not help
read "How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade (Reinstallation) of Windows
XP" (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=315341).
