View Full Version : Hide icons

I had to reinstall XP. Afterwood, I am no longer able to
hide the icons on the right side of the task bar. I have
opened properties and clicked hide inactive icons, but
there is no button like there was before to hide/unhide.
Any assistance to this minor problem is appreciated.
Thanks

Hi, Rick.
That is now the Notification Area, although most of us still call it the
System Tray, or SysTray, for short.
I'm not sure where you clicked "hide inactive icons". Right-click in the
SysTray (on the clock is a good spot) and choose Customize Notifications...
From here you should be able to find the list of icons, where you can set
each one individually to Always Show, Always Hide or Hide when inactive. Is
this the procedure you already used?
Is Lock the taskbar checked?
Also, have you waited long enough? The inactive icons don't usually
disappear immediately, but after some delay - I've forgotten how long, but
it's not immediate. When there are hidden icons, a "<" appears at the left
of the SysTray; clicking on this symbol shows the hidden icons temporarily.
If you still can't find it, post back with more specifics about HOW you
tried to hide the icons.

Thank you. I did each one individually, and that hid the
icons.

If you have set everything, just wait awhile. It acts as tho it were on a
timer.

Rick,
I encountered a similar problem after installing Netscape and Norton
AntiVirus. I could no longer get the "arrow" back, and all the icons
seemed fixed. I waited about 20 minutes, but still no change. I was
able to uninstall Netscape, and Norton, and roll back to a restore point
I set just prior to installing them, and so I'm back to it working.
You seemed to have fixed it (in a later post). How did you do
this... You mentioned something about one at a time. I see the list,
changed a few, did an apply, waited, etc. nothing... Turned it off/on,
still no help.
One thing of note was that MS Messenger decided to activate itself
in the middle of this. I think that had some influence, as I tried to
tell it not to run in the background, or show up in the tray using
preferences.... Thanks in advance.

To all,
Is there a registry entry that tracks the time on this, or forces it
to reset on/off?
