View Full Version : Mapping a 2000 drive on XP with no password Prompt
Hi
I have 3 computers running on a network through a router.
2 of the computers are wireless. These are alos both
running 2000pro. The third is running xp home.
I have on one of the 2000 systems a drive which I want to
share accross the network. This works fine to the other
2000 machine but when I try to do the same for xp it
prompts for a password.
I have given full access to the drive with no password +
I have given no password access to the machine with the
drive.
Once you have provided the passwod all is fine - until
you log off from the xp machine and log back in and it
prompts again. How do I stop it from promting each time
and effectivly just have an open mapped network drive?

Set up all the user accounts & passwords identically on all computers.
Hey there,
Thanks for the reply. I'm sure that that will work but
doesn't it make it pointless having seperate user accounts
on the xp machine.
I want to leave the 2000 machine with the hard drive on it
on all the time - essentially running it as a server (it
will be used to store data common to a number of the xp
users)

No, because if you want to share data in a workgroup, there's no central
account/security 'database' as there is in a domain, so you have to do
something if you don't want people to be prompted for credentials - you need
to set up all the accounts/passwords on the "server" and apply security to
them. The WinXP clients will pass thru their credentials to that box & be
allowed/denied accordingly.
