ip address release/renew

I can't get windows to release an IP address. I have a home network and cox
internet. One computer stop connecting and I realized that it keeps
assigning the wrong IP. What can I do to get it to release?

Have you verified that you do not have the IP address statically assigned in
your TCP Properties?

If you are setup to DHCP the address, it is possible that your ISP is just
giving you the same address over and over (not uncommon).

Can you clearify what you mean by "Wrong IP"?

It's going through a router and the other 2 computers connected work fine.
I have even tried hooking this computer up direct to the cable modem, I
still get the same ip.

By wrong I get 169.254.148.51
s mast 255.255.0.0
Should by more like 192.168.2.18
sm 255.255.255.0

When releasing the ip and sm stay the same they don't go to 0.

When I try to renew I get an error occured while trying to renew local
connection 4. "It says 4 because I to the nic out and tried replacing it
with no change." An operation was attempted on something that is not a
socket.

The 169.254.x.x IP address wasn't assigned by DHCP, so it can't be
released. It indicates that the network connection is configured to
obtain an IP address automatically but can't contact a DHCP server.

Try these steps, taken from Microsoft Knowledge Base article 811259,
to fix the "not a socket" problem:

1. Backup and delete the following registry keys:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\Winsock
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\Winsock2

2. Reboot

3. Open the network connections folder, right click your network
connection, and click Properties.

4. Click Install | Protocol | Add.

5. Click "Have Disk...", type "\windows\inf" in the box, and click
OK.

6. Click "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)", then click OK.

7. Reboot.
