A big 266MB download. No downside except that.

The cons, it is about 266mb, large download. as opposed to Express
which may be anywhere from about 60mb to 200mb depending on what
patches are already installed.
The pro, download and burn to CD.
You have it for future use on this and other computers without need to
download again.
It works fine on single computers.

Hi

Only cons is the large download size, (266) MB...

If you have a decent download speed from the Internet,
I would have used this one to install SP2.

Be sure to disable all Anti virus/popup blocker and similar
software before you install SP2 (using the 266 MB file you
can install SP2 offline, then temporarily disabling Anti virus
and 3rd party firewall products are safe).

It is the complete package. MSoft are trying to push those with only
one machine to update into using the 'Windows Update' approach, which is
less strain on the servers by being smaller. If you download the big
one you can burn it to a CD to use again should it be needed - or to
help friends and neighbors

One more question, if I may. What files and/or directories can be safely
deleted after installing XP SP2?

Hi

The following folders should be safe to delete:

%windir%\$xpsp1hfm$\
%windir%\$NtUninstallQ<some#>$\
%windir%\$NtUninstallKB<some#>$\
%windir%\SoftwareDistribution\Download\

(the last one is where WU5 temporary put installation files)

If you are sure you don't need to uninstall SP2, you can delete
%windir%\$NtServicePackUninstall$\

Alternatively:

If you make a backup of the folder to e.g. a CD, you can put it
back if you need to uninstall SP2. After restoring the backup,
run %windir%\$NtServicePackUninstall$\spuninst\spunins t.exe
to start the process.

Torgeir..that wouldn't jeopardize a future uninstallation of SP2 at all?
In another thread I read that certain files appear unnecessary but in fact
are used at some stage, or maybe that was the i386 files.?????

Sorry I re-read and realised that you said "if you are sure etc. etc." I do
have about 481mb in %windir%\SoftwareDistribution\Download 2 items and one I
know is the SP2 I assume that one is safe to discard? They are
shown here

Look again, those files are a total of 481 "KB", not MB.

The files put in Windows\ServicePackFIles are needed. They will be used
in preference to ones from the original CD if needed by File
Protection/SFC/New Hardware etc. On an NTFS drive a useful amount of
space can be saved by compressing it. What you can do if you have a CD
burner is burn the complete folder to a CD, then run regedit.exe and at

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Setup

Change the value of ServicePackSourcePath and ServicePackCachePath in
the right pane to reflect the drive. Best if you have 2 drives, and can
have the original SourcePath on one and this on the other

Another point is that SP2 makes a restore point that is enormous - 600
to 700 MB. Once settled and a new point made, use
Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Disk Cleanup
and in its More Options click the button to delete all but the most
recent restore point
