View Full Version : How to prevent an unintentional internet trafic?

Dmitriy Kopnichev

Hello
How to prevent an unintentional internet traffic? IT department says that my
IP address downloaded too many mb from *.wn.com. I did not open www.wn.com.
Does setting "Security level for "Internet" zone" to "High" help? Does
switching Flash off in "Flash Toggler" help?

Have you considered asking your IT department for help? Most don't like it
when folks start messing with their PCs.

They said me to learn how to prevent by myself or close every IE window just
after reading a page.

Sounds like you need to replace your IT staff.

Well, let's start with the basics. What antivirus protection are you using?
Have you scanned the computer for adware or spyware?

I'm using Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition 8 Client. "File System
Real-time Protection" is turned on. How to scan the computer for adware or
spyware?

Sorry for breaking in. Symantec AV Corp Ed doesn't scan for
adware/spyware. Richard can fill you in on the rest (Hint: Spybot Search
and Destroy, Ad-Aware).

Now, I'll excuse myself.

Lance is spot-on with his recommendations. I recommend you start with
AdAware from http://www.lavasoftusa.com/ since you can safely remove
everything that it finds. Spybot Search&Destroy from
http://www.spybot.info/ should be used next, but you should be a little more
careful what you remove when it runs since it tends to flag items that are
harmless in and of themselves but could possibly be exploited by someone
else.

Greetings --

.. Most antivirus applications do not scan for or protect you
from adware/spyware, because, after all, you've installed them
yourself, so you must want them there, right?

To deal with issues caused by any sort of "adware" and/or
"spyware,"such as Gator, Comet Cursors, Smiley Central, Xupiter,
Bonzai Buddy, or KaZaA, and their remnants, that you've deliberately
(but without understanding the consequences) installed, two products
that are quite effective (at finding and removing this type of
scumware) are Ad-Aware from www.lavasoft.de and SpyBot Search &
Destroy from www.safer-networking.org/. Both have free versions.
It's even possible to use SpyBot Search & Destroy to "immunize" your
system against most future intrusions. I use both and generally
perform manual scans every week or so to clean out cookies, etc.

Additionally, manual removal instructions for the most common
varieties of scumware are available here:

PC Hell Spyware and Adware Removal Help

The AdAware and Spybot Search&Destroy did not find much. I deleted all that
they found. Does setting "Security level for "Internet" zone" to "High" help
preventing the unintentional internet traffic?

Probably not. Once the invader is inside your system it's too late for a
security setting to prevent it from having its way with you. Can you try
installing a firewall on your computer (almost all the major firewall
companies have a free trial version) and using it to see what process is
accessing the Internet?

Our LAN has a firewall already. My IP address downloaded too many mb from
*.wn.com because, I think, I left a news page with changing pictures opened
in IE overnight. How to know what page would consume much of internet
traffic?

I guess I'm missing something - why would you leave your browser connected
to a site overnight? Why not simply close it down when you leave?

I need information on web pages on next day. How to know what page would
consume much of internet traffic? My computer defragment or check HDD or
check for viruses overnight.
