View Full Version : SP2 am I screwed?

rua17

I installed SP2 but a lot of functions stopped to work. As an example:

- The task bar doesn't show me my active applications
- Palm Hotsync doesn't work anymore
- Windows Update doesn't work
- Cannot uninstall SP2 ()
- Windows restore doesn't work anymore (System cannot find the specified
file)
- Copy paste doesn't work

And the list goes on and on...

Am I screwed like so many times in the past with microsoft? or there's
anything I can do to resolve this big problem?

Just what reason did you install SP2 for anyway. I was wondering if I am
missing something I don't know about.

Don't know if this will help but, if you created a restore point you could
try that.

I my self will not even try sp2 till it is out atleast a month.

For security reasons off course, the pop-up killer is one example.

By the way my computer were working excelent before this SP, I downloaded
the 266 network file. No problems with installation, Winver is now Build
2600.xp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158 Service Pack 2.

Any idea?

I created a restore point but now this function is telling me that system
restore is not able to protect my computer
:( . I advice you to not install it in at least a year.

Your missing some files from the service back. It seems
like you tryed to uninstall after you installed.

Did you try and do a uninstall from the console via the
setup cd?

I 'advice' you to make sure you have a real version on SP2 and not some
previous beta versions that are all over the net. The foreign language
sites are often pointing to outdated versions.

welp your screwed. Blow away your windows dir and
reinstall. I'd hold off for sp2a there are other show
stoppers. There will have to be a new build.

remove sp2 via add/remove programs...then run restore to
a previous date..
MS just announced it is setting up a block so you cannot
automatically download it.

Had the same problem. I formatted and started from
scratch. SP2 intalled fine when it was clean. In
browsing the boards, it looks like if your main drive is
SATA, there are issues. Mine was, but still don't know
if that was it...

Only 1 other thing I can think of that may have caused
it... I ran it from a secondary hard drive, and didn't
actually do the extraction. (just ran it from the
downloaded exe). I extracted while trying to fix it, but
that didn't help. I DID run from the extracted files
when I installed against the clean install of XP.

Have heard about the sp trashing profiles.. might be
related, but not sure.

You did follow the advice and made a complete backup of your system
before installing SP2 right? Nothing is ever fool proof with computers
and software, though so far SP2 has been problem free for most people.
There was something in your setup interfering with the proper
installation. Here is a good checklist for installing service packs.
