I've successfully installed SP2 for Windows XP on 5 PCs so far.
But the 6th one is being problematic.
Everything was working fine before installing SP2 on this PC. The
installation of SP2 completed successfully & I was prompted to restart the
PC. Now comes the problem...
The PC will boot, it show the startup splash screen, the screen then goes
black, a mouse pointer appears, then after a few seconds I get a BSOD (blue
screen) with the following info:
***STOP: 0x0000008E (0xc0000005, 0x8056EBA4, 0xF9BD1BA4, 0x00000000)
I have tried to boot into Safe Mode, Last Known Good Config., etc. all with
the same result.
I can boot into the recovery console, though. I ran CHKDSK /R to check for
errors but the hard drive came up clean.
I know that 0x0000008E is usually an indication of bad RAM, so I tried
different sticks of RAM, still with the same result.
I'm thinking it has to be related to SP2, because the problem started
immediately after rebooting to complete the SP2 installation. Any idea on
what to try next????
I really don't want to have to spend a day and a half wiping & re-installing
Windows & all the apps on this PC.

The only other thing that I have seen this error message relate to is
incompatable BIOS/Drivers.
Try uninstalling SP2 from the recovery console by following the instructions
in http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;875355
Then make sure your BIOS and all drivers are bang up to date.
Then try reapplying SP2

Try using less memory. One stick 256 instead of two.
Bios may not Recognize that much memory. My computer is limited to
512

Thanks for the quick reply...
but after making a call to MS Tech Support, we found out the registry was
corrupt. We tried to restore a backup of it through the recovery console,
but the system was just too far gone. I'm just gonna yank the hard drive, so
that I can pull some data off of it onto another PC, then I'm gonna put it
back in & do a complet re-install.
Thanks again.

If you ever have this problem again with the corrupt registry, then see if
the following article I wrote helps you. I have had a lot of success with
this method.
