View Full Version : xp re-activation

My hard drive has crashed. I am (was) running Win XPPro - full version -
NOT OEM fully licensed and activated for the PC. I have a mirror image of
the drive - so I could do a restore and probably get pretty much back to
where I was before this mess. Aside from losing some programs on another
hard drive. I am not sure if this would require ( or Microsoft allow)
another product activation. Tecnically this is the same PC. Is there a
method to unactivate the current (crashed) system and do a clean re-
install. Attempts at getting to the clicking/whirring drive are impossible
other than to reinstall the mirror onto a good drive. But as long as I am
doing a reinstall it may as well be clean.
Any other experiences with this type of problem would be appreciated. I am
unsure as to how this works in reguards to the EULA. Do I need a lawyer or a
Microsoft Tech?

If it's been more than 120 days since you last activated that
specific Product Key, you'll most likely be able to activate via the
Internet without problem. If it's been less, you might have to make a
5 minute phone call.
Here are the facts pertaining to activation:

Hi PJ,
Restoring the image should not require reactivation, as long as you are not
restoring it under new hardware (which may require a repair installation).
Even if it did, at worse you would need to phone in the activation. No need
for a lawyer.
