XP SP2 won't install.

I'm using downloaded file WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe

It gets to "Creating Restore Point" then it says "Unable to read or
write to the database" and "Service pack 2 installation did not
complete"

Its possibility that the downloaded XP SP2 is corrupted. I would also check
to see if any utility programs are running in background during setup XP
SP2. Disable any Antivirus programs, or firewalls before attempting
installation.

When I go to Windows Update I get Windows Update V5 rather than V4 even
though I haven't installed SP2 yet.

Also Windows Update does not offer SP2 as a download.

Is this normal??

Hi Brian,

The answer to both questions is yes. The new V5 Windows Update site is now
up for WindowsXP users, and SP2 is not yet on the update site (just a few
more days).

Well I downloaded it again and the files match byte for byte.

My computer still loads Windows Update version 4. Is it supposed to be
opening version 5?

This is the only MS Knowledge Base Article that address not being able
to install. The error message doesn't match your situation but in case
it could be of help:

You receive an "Access is denied" error message when you try to install
Windows XP Service Pack 2

Hi,

It will migrate there on its own, the update site is randomly updating
users. Everyone will be migrated over in due time.

I was able to download SP2 with a firewall and anti-virus running. I
think there's another variable involved.

FWIW: I slipstreamed SP2 into XP to make installations a lot easier.

To completely preclude any program/service interaction - boot to
Safe Mode and install SP2 from there.

I have the same problem and I believe it's because the system restore
function is not working correctly. If you try your system restore and
get this msg "System Restore is not able to protect your computer,
Please restart...." then that is the cause of your sp2 install
problem.
You have to repair or reinstall system restore...

Occasionally, System Restore files can become corrupted and the program
will stop working. Try reinstalling/repairing System Restore like this:

You can make system restore run with these steps:

1. Click Start->Run->Type "C:\windows\inf" (without the quotes)

2. Look for a file named: "SR.INF" and RIGHT click on it

3. Choose "Install".

Follow the prompts, Reboot and System Restore should be ready to use.
