View Full Version : AutoUpdate & SP2 - Quick Question

I have AutoUpdate set to ask before download and install. A couple evenings
ago autoupdate asked to download SP2. I answered "yes". 2 days later I have
yet to be asked if I want to install the update. Is this update hung up or
something?

if you are on a dialup, it may take a long time so you don't have a
slowdown in performance. It runs in the background until the file is
completely downloaded, as far as I know.
If you are on a highspeed link, it should happen quickly. The total
package is only (LOL) 70 Megs for most machines. So you can calculate who
long it should take based on your connection speed and figuring that MS
might only take 10 or 15% of your speed - but that's just a guess. They
certainly won't hog all your bandwidth while downloading it.

Naw, I don't think that's it. With a tested downstream speed of 1675 kbps I
think 2 and a half days is a bit too long for it to be that.

I had exactly the same problem Dusty, yesterday and so did a chap called
Robin, I believe. I'm on 3mb broadband speed in the uk. I still haven't
received another notification nor anything else today, after yesterdays
notification so I'm pretty sure speed is not the issue.

Yes, that was me...I am not a chap..I am a woman. And I am also on
broadband. I have a router with 2 comps connected. I wonder if the router
could have blocked the download. But then, it would have blocked all
downloads from windows update, yes?
If anyone knows, please, do tell.
Thanks

Oh, profuse apologies, Robin. I don't use a router as I have a standalone
desktop pc. So I think that could eliminate a possible router issue

No worries hun. It's not like you can see who is typing the messages..LOL!
I suppose it's just a MS thing and we will just have to wait. From what I
can see so far, maybe it's a good thing we can't get the update yet.. :o)

I think its possibly a windows update error, as the autoupdate has been
constantly on my pc now for the past 3 days. However with mine it did not
ask me if I wanted to download SP2, and my firewall shows that its not
downloading anything. Any Ideas?
Many Thanks,

Under 'autoupdate' in 'system' I have set it to give me notification of any
windows updates. You might have it set to the defaulted recommended
autodownload and install option. That's why you don't receive notification.
Other than that, I think you have the same problem as I and some others.

I have it set to inform me of any updates before it downloads them, so that
can't be it. I think another user on this PC must've accepted it first, but
from what i can see quite a few people are having this problem! I personally
don't trust SP2 at the minute as many people appear to be having problems
with it, so i need to find out how to stop it auto updating now!
Many Thanks,

Ok, well......I've read that MS is throttling down updates because of
volume. I think their servers are overloaded. I guess that maybe that's why
we're not seeing updates. Just to set everything straight, I have my
autoupdate set for noticication before download and install. I've recieved
several updates in the past so I know my autoupdate is working and that my
firewall is letting them through. I recieved notification that the SP2
update is available so I ok'ed the download but never received a
notification that it's ready to install.
AND, I whole heartedly agree with Robin that I'm not sure I even want SP2
after all I've been reading so far
