scandisk - provided since win 95
chkdsk/checkdisk/ - provided win ver 2.0 - 6.2
and updated ver provided in win xp
and
scanning a disk - for possible errors/flaws has been
a function of 'chkdsk.exe' when you run it without
switches/parms - ie
note
chkdsk /? - shows such 'switches/parms and purpose'
chkdsk - in it's updated ver in 'win xp' now runs
on 'NTFS' req all prog's inactive - thus
before windows xp fires up

it is best practice to run before running 'defrag'
as defragmentation - reorganizes disk files
which
all comes fr prev s/w functions on
'mainframes - the big iron'
