View Full Version : Unavailable Device (COM1)

I have just purchased a new PC with windows XP home
edition. Everything seems to work correctly except for one
problem.
I have connected a Spirit Magnum 56K serial modem to the
COM1 port. The system finds the modem and appears to allow
me to install the requisite driver. Then if I test the
modem by running the "query modem" option I get a success
message. This to me indicates that all is well on this
front.
However, when I use the wizard to create a new internet
connection I have a problem. The wizard appears to run
correctly but when I look at the connection icon it shows
the message "Unavailable Device" and if you try to use
that icon you cannot elect to connect via it. If you look
in the properties for this icon and under the connection
option the message "Unavailable Device (COM1)" is shown.
The system does not give any way select which connection
you wish to use.

Any help that you can give me would be most appreciated.

Andrew

Check your BIOS and insure the COM ports are enabled/disabled, whichever is
required.
