View Full Version : SP2 install on Dell Laptop
KIF
August 21st 04, 09:05 PM
I have three computers on my Home LAN. So I decided to
test SP2 on one of the machines that is not critical to
my work. It is a Dell Inspiron 2500 laptop.
I installed SP2 on this system. The installation moved
along without incident except when the machine restarted.
When the uspdated OS with SP2 tried to boot, the screen
went blank and stayed that way for over 2 hours. I turned
the machine off and turned it on again. The system
started up succesffully and seems to be working
satisfactorily.
Based on this experience, I am taking my time installing
SP2 on my other systems. I have disable Windows Update
from downloading for 120 days using the Microsft patch
that allows me to that. My third system is staying as it
is until SP2 shakes out. What an ordeal!!

Guess what? My Dell laptop had this happen twice during 1st bootup after sp2
install.

Don't think its a problem. Action is similar to what happens on Windows
install when it has driver problems. Just keep rebooting until things are
ok.

until things are ok.

So was your copy of XP an OEM copy preinstalled by Dell?
If so what did they say about installing SP2?

In my case, no, it was the full retail version. But the install
was about 2 years ago.

Right, that's standard operating procedure. SP2 works great.

Not really relevant. Just do SP2.

I wasn't looking for some kind of solution, I was reassuring
the OP. I've had SP2 running with no problems on 2
computers since Aug 9.

Yeah, I'm sure that's true everywhere, but some of the posters
on this ng seem to think that SP2 is a vast Microsoft conspiricy
to screw up all the pc's in the world. How does that happen?

Doubtful, I use Linux and frequent their ng's, and as
far as I can tell, they are oblivious to SP2. Probably
because they revise the kernel on a weekly basis
and are very used to the kind of problems you
have when you do that.

Before installing SP2 on a laptop contact the manufacturer and ask them
if it will work ok and make sure you have downloaded any new drivers
that are needed for your laptop for SP2.

Just like they HAVE DONE with SP2.

That decrease your stability.

KIF:
I have installed SP2 on several Dell Latitude C400s that had Dell's XP Pro
installed (not the retail XP).
The C400 installs worked the same as the SP2 over retail XP installs that I
have done.
