The follwoing error is what I receieve and keeps going in
a loop:

We apologize for the inconvenience, but Windows did not
start successfully. A recent hardware or software change
might have caused this. If your computer stopped
responding, restarted unexpectly, or was
automatically shut down to protect your files and
folders, choose Last Known Good configuration to revert
to the most recent settings that worked . If a previous
startup attempt was interrupted due to a power failure or
because the Power or Reset button, or if you aren't
sure what caused the problem, choose Start Windows
Normally

Can not get to a dos prompt or safe mode

Hello,

You need to boot your CD distribution and select the repair option.
Then just follow the procedure to do a XP setup. It will them give you
three options, select the repair option R ..
This will take you to the "COMMAND" recovery console.
then just do a chckdsk /r to repair.

If you do not have a "bootable" distribution CD for XP , please call the
1-800- (number) for HP that is in your owners manual.
Explain your exact error message they should know this one as it has been
around for sometime (XP feature). They should be able to send you a CD that
will boot and you can just follow the instructions that come with the cd.

This was a "issue" with XP that was "fixed" with service pack 1. It was not
specific to any specific vendor.

Good luck,
