Don--
1) Try to use the F8 key to boot to the Windows Advanced Options Menu and
start in Safe Mode. From there try System Restore.
2) If that won't work, then try F8 to the WAOM and try Last Known Good
Configuration.
3) If that won't work try a repair install.
If there's no possible way to use SR, I'd boot from your XP CD and do a
repair/upgrade install. I think its your best bet. Once you recover, you
may want to reinstall SP2 again. You'll need to F2 to the bios, to change
your boot order to make sure that the CD-ROM is ahead of the hard drive and
the "A" drive.
Here are instructions and screen shots: (You'll see the XP install screens
with the product key, but this will substitute the files you need to
repair). I think this is much better for you than a "parallel" install to
another folder or drive because you will get all your settings back and your
data, and you won't have the time consuming chore of retrieving them and
possibly having to reload your applications

Before all that make sure you tried to boot at least 5 times. It'll often
self repair.

Recover your computer to a bootable state and remove Windows XP SP2
To recover your computer to a bootable state and remove Windows XP SP2,
follow these steps:
1. Start your computer by using the Windows XP
Recovery Console or by using the Microsoft Windows Preinstallation
Environment (WinPE), depending on your situation. To start your computer by
using the Recovery Console, follow these steps:
a. Insert the original
release version of the Microsoft Windows XP CD in your computer's CD drive
or DVD drive, and then restart your computer.
Note Your computer must be configured to start from the CD drive or DVD
drive. For more information about how to do this, see your computer's
documentation or contact your computer manufacturer.
b. When the "Press any key
to boot from CD" message appears, press a key to start your computer from
the Windows XP CD.
c. When the "Welcome to
Setup" screen is displayed, press R to start the Recovery Console.
d. When you are prompted,
type the number that corresponds to the installation of Windows that you
want to access from the Recovery Console, and then press ENTER. For example,
if you have one installation of Windows on your computer, type 1, and then
press ENTER.
e. When you are prompted,
type the Administrator password, and then press ENTER.
2. At the command prompt in Recovery Console,
type the following lines. Press ENTER after each line.
cd $NtServicePackUninstall$\Spuninst
batch spuninst.txt
exit
3. Remove the Windows XP CD from your computer's
CD drive or DVD drive, and then restart your computer.
4. Run the Windows XP SP2 Removal Wizard to
remove Windows XP SP2. To do this:
. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
a. At the command prompt, type the following lines. Press ENTER after each
line.
cd %Windir%\$NtServicePackUninstall$\Spuninst
spuninst.exe
b. Follow the instructions to remove Windows XP SP2.

Does the blue "crawler" freeze at the Windows logo screen? If yes and you
know you have a P4 Prescott or Extreme Edition CPU, go into the BIOS and
disable the L1/L2 cache (yes, performance will be terrible) restart and you
will get into XP.
Go to the Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs and uninstall SP2. The issue
is under investigation.
It the first two lines do not describe your problem accurately, follow the
other posters' advice.

PROVIDE A CITATION for that claim.

Which claim? That it is under investigation? Yes, I passed the issue to
Microsoft on 8/13/04 myself.
No, I'm NOT sending you copies of my personal email so that you can verify
it. Just live with the fact and read a few postings from the afflicted.
Just because your SP2 install(s) is fine doesn't mean everyone else's is.
Three out of four of my PCs are fine. But one has a Prescott and most
definitely is NOT.
Go out, buy yourself a Prescott CPU on an i865/i875 motherboard and you can
play with it yourself ALL night. Do have fun, won't you.

Hi Don - How to use the Automatic Recovery feature to recover your computer
if the Windows XP Service Pack 2 Setup program is not completed successfully
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=875355&product=windowsxpsp2kb
This article discusses how to use the Automatic Recovery feature to restore
your computer to its previous configuration if the installation of Microsoft
Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) is not completed successfully and you cannot
start your computer. Follow these steps if your computer does not start
correctly after you try to upgrade your computer from Windows XP to Windows
XP SP2. This article also discusses how to collect information about the
Windows XP SP2 installation and about your computer to help troubleshoot
issue. The Windows XP SP2 Setup logs, the System Information tool, and the
event logs contain information that can help a Microsoft Product Support
Services professional who may be working with you to diagnose the issue.

OK, so it's an unreported nor previously discussed here in detail claim.

OK, this one is about Prescotts and older unfixed(non-Prescott ready) mobo
BIOSs. The thread concludes flash the latest mobo BIOS for Prescott
compatibility and SP2 works fine.

Well, a little more than that, I think. MS has been informed of the issue
and is currently working on it, as posted there.

Nope, last post(8/21/04) in that forum thread:
"NOW..
goto mainboard manufacturers website and update
the mainboard BIOS to latest one (Prescott users)
Then you can re-enable the L1/L2 processor/mainboard(?) caching,
and install SP2 properly.
(that is.. if mainboard people updated their BIOS code)
NT Canuck"
I traced the citations there back to grc.techtalk and it's all a tempest in
a teapot that is fixed by the appropriate/latest mobo BIOS which everyone
should already have had, right?
So what does MS need to work on?

The list shows no mobo BIOS version which means it's totally MEANINGLESS as
the problem has already been isolated to a mobo BIOS that is NOT Prescott
ready. And in the threads I've cited the latest Prescott ready mobo BIOSs
fix the issue!

All the mobos posted HAVE the latest available BIOS. But thanks for the
reminder. It was so sweet of you.
Did you not think that was the FIRST thing I did after installing the board
and POSTing? I see that, perhaps because I am female, you do not rate my
hardware skills very highly. Not all PC builders are male. Not all are
as dumb as you seem to think.
Please provide a list of motherboards with the i865/i875 chipset where a
Prescott is known to work with SP2. I will go and buy it today.

Well then WHY do those forum threads that you or somebody posted(you were in
those threads) end with a declaration that flashing the latest mobo BIOS
fixed the issue at least for the case of the MSI mobo???

That forum thread SAYS the MSI with the latest BIOS works fine. Do you
challenge that?

As a thought, this sounds to me like trouble with the new DEP Data
execution protection. But I don't know of a way to turn that right off
