View Full Version : Windows Messenger 4.7.3000 & Windows XP SP2

I just reloaded my system with Windows XP that had SP2 slipstreamed into the CD. I noticed that version of Windows Messenger changed from 4.7.2009 to 4.7.3000. Also you can't install the MSN Add-In to get e-mail alerts. Anyone else having the same problem?

TIA,

Greg

Yea Greg, and you can find the solution that worked for me on the thread started by Brucefl on 8/21/2004. His post/question is within this newsgroup under the subject:

msg, no longer tells me I have email(hotmail) after upgrading sp2?

That should help you straighten it out.

Best regards... Gunner

Greetings Greg,

Actually this behavior is by design, 4.7.3000 does not support Add-Ins.

In order to get this functionality back, you'll either need to downgrade to the previous
version of Windows Messenger (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/messenger/download.asp) or use
MSN Messenger instead
(http://messenger.msn.com/Download).

Gunner & Jonathan,

Thanks for your reply. I had already gone back to version 4.7.2009 but was curious in there was another answer. Why doesn't MS put this information on their web-site? Was the reason for removing MSN Add-In support SECURITY?

Good question Greg... I have the same thought. I think the functionality of 4.7.2009 is much better. MS "should" retain/combine the features or else tell us what we lose by upgrading (maybe they do - I just haven't been able to find it).

Hopefully when you went back (I did the same) things are back to the way you like them.

Best regards... Gunner

Hi Greg,

Not at all, the functionality was actually removed in Windows Messenger 5.0 as well simply
because this functionality is now apart of MSN Messenger exclusively.

Jonathan,

I guess I don't understand Microsoft's philosophy of removing "features"
from new versions. I still use Windows Messenger because MSN Messenger
doesn't work with Outlook. Why doesn't Microsoft combine all the "features"
of Windows Messenger and MSN Messenger and make it work with Outlook and
Outlook Express?
