Hi,

I am trying to troubleshoot an issue for my parents - they
are unable to browse to http pages, e.g google

The problem does not affect https served pages and they
can access internet banking for example without any
problem. Just to prove their connectivity beyond doubt
they can also send/receive mail.

In the past when they have had this issue I have been able
to resolve the problem by running the Welchia worm fix (as
suggested by their ISP) and then rebooting both the
workstation and their h/w firewall (smoothwall). They
have had the issue on a number of occasions and resolved
it via the above method without a problem.

Yesterday they had the issue so I applied the "workaround"
but to no avail. It was only then that I noticed the
common thread of the affected sites (i.e the only ones
they can access are https).

Another fix recommended by their ISP was to use their
proxy server however as they are running through the
smoothwall this has not been necessary in the past and
indeed did not resolve their issue.

Yesterday I tried sending all traffic through the proxy
server just to understand if it was a port related issue.
Sure enough using the proxy server now works for all
traffic when applied to their LAN settings, but was unable
to access the smoothwall. I removed the proxy entry for
HTTPS traffic which allowed me to access smoothwall again
and of course all the secure web pages are also fine and
have never been an issue.

My questions are this - what is this issue? - is it virus
related? Why did the resolution change? How do I stop it
in the future?
..
