What is a decent free Windows XP burn software?
I have Direct CD version 4. It works fine under Windows 2000;
but I have used it on another XP machine and XP crapped out on me.
I have used CDWriterPro_Trial and HP Record Now.
They both seem to only like new CDs. I want something that
will integrate into Windows XP Explorer with drag and drop.
Thanks in advance for the Free advice!

This software is commonly knowen as packet writing software and works with
the UDF file system format.
You will need to note that UDF formatted cd's cannot be read by anything
lower than windows 98 unless you have a UDF reader program for windows 95.
Also cd players etc will not be able to read it either.
There are various programs that you could use, HP has one with some weird
name that i cannot remember, or there's INcd and nero (not free) has some
UDF capabilities. Try searching download.com for UDF or packet writing.

Direct CD is packet writing software. Packet writing software preformats
CD-R or CD-R/W so the media can be used like a giant floppy or small hard
drive. As far as I know there are no free packet writing software programs
unless you have an HP CD Writer. If so you can download a program called DLA
(Drive Letter Access) from the www.hp.com site. DLA provides packet writing
capabilities. The free version only works with HP writers though.
If you really want packet writing capabilities then you might consider
upgrading to Easy CD & DVD Creator 6. It installs Drag n Drop (formerly
called Direct CD) and it works very nicely with XP. Or you may wish to
purchase InCD from www.nero.com . InCD will not work with CD-R though only
with CD-R/W disks. Another option is to purchase RecordNow Max from
www.stompinc.com . Only the full retail version (not the demo) will install
packet writing capabilities.

I have tried HP Record Now. It seems to only want new media and cannot read
or append to my existing DirectCD 4 CDs. It and XP can still read my CDRWs,
but will not append to them.
Thanks

How is the program behaving with new media? Can you add/append to
CDRWs that were not touched by DirectCD?
Chances are good that DirectCD will be the only program that can
handle those disks that already have data on them. Each company's
packet writing tends to "possess" any CDRW that it prepares.
You might be able to transfer the existing data on the CDRW to the
hard drive. Reformat the disk with HP Record Now and then transfer the
data back to the CD. Future writes should go okay since Record Now
will be in charge of that disk.
