I'm using a dial-up connection (46.6Kbps) for SP2 download. I know it's going
to take a while. However, how can you check download status? At this
connection, how long for the download?

It would be faster to walk 20 miles to a friends house that has broadband,
and then download it and burn it to CD. Then spend the night, and walk 20
miles back home, and go to sleep. Go to work the next day, and then install
it when you get home after work, and you will still beat the Auto Update.

~48 hours

273,000,000 bytes x 8 bits per byte = 2,184,000,000 (2.2 billion bits)

2.2 billion bits / 46600 bits per second = 47210 seconds = 13.11(+) hours
(someone can check my math)

Of course, this would be in a perfect network environment where your
download speed never varied, which is unlikely.

And you better use download software that can pick up where it left off.
The chances that your 13+ hour download won't crap out several times
is pretty much zero.

It will take until Christmas. (Or at least it will feel like it.)

I walked 40 miles non-stop once.
It was painful :)

you can order for CD, but you will have to wait for that. you can check for
more information on CD availability here:

Much, much slower. Auto Update uses BITS, Background Intelligent Transfer
Service, to download SP2.

"[T]he nature of BITS is to download using the unused portion of the
bandwidth in a system." -

You got several cute answers already, so Ill try and give you some accurate,
self experienced info.

I connected to the net Monday around 4:45pm, got a connection of 49.2Kbps,
browsed one page and noticed the AU icon, upon clicking, it informed me it
was ready to download and I chose yes.

I watched for about an hour, if you hover the mouse it'll give you a % of
download received, at about 10mb (1 hour) the download halted and the HDD
light was frantic and the % jumped to 34%, then resumed download, I left and
came back around 1:30am this morning (about 8.5 hours later) to find a popup
informing me it was ready to install, I closed IE, clicked install,
remembered I'd forgotten to turn off AV, had absolutely no problems, none.

I just read on another NG of a SP2 CD being received from MS and the person
said He thought He wouldn't get the CD since it was the test site he'd
signed up on. He also said the CD had some extras on it.
