View Full Version : XP Programs Launch Slow Down,Help Please!

Hi All, i upgraded from Win Me on my Dell System to Xp Pro. the system is fat 32 and not ntfs as i
haven't decided if i like it yet as i run allot of older programs and heard that they might not be
compatible on Ntfs and am taking my programs for a test drive as it were.
i have done all the service updates for xp that were applicable and the system seemed stable after
this for a few weeks and in the last few days all programs started to take a minute or more to
finish launching.it would seem that i have changed something, but all i can remember is turning off
system restore.
I have restarted system restore but the problem is still here. I have read some threads in Xp
newsgroups that say one of the updates are responsible for the system slowdown. Well, in my
my haste to play with this system, i Down loaded a neat little App that cleans out your Windows
update files not realizing how important they might be to have a back up ( Will Not Ever Do This
Again).
what i have done to try and fix this are listed below.Sorry for the long read and any help will be
appreciated. Whoop@ss
1. Not Launch Norton with startup, or scan programs at launch
2. Defragment all drives, upwards of 7 gig on each partition free
3. Scan for all manner of bugs and spy ware
4. Minimum system process's running
5. Checked Cpu usage before launching any program, it is running below 20%
6. Clean Pre fetch
7. Scan disked and ran some norton Products looking for bad sectors and other Probs
Stats:
PIII 550
320 Ram
2x 20 gig 7200 rpm Drives both partitioned in half.
Geforce 2 Video Card
and on a dsl hookup.

If 819634 applies you need to uninstall old 811493 and reinstall new =
811493.
You May Experience Performance Issues After You Install the 811493 =
(MS03-013) Package on Your Windows XP SP1-Based Computer
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=3Dkb;en-us;819634
Slow start! For delays before the icons appear on the Desktop use the =
Bootvis.exe tool -the download on the link page which follows:
http://www.microsoft.com/hwdev/platform/performance/fastboot/default.asp
Otherwise I would look in Event Viewer at the logged errors.
1. To open Event Viewer, click Start, click Control Panel, double-click =
Administrative Tools, double-click Event Viewer and select System for =
system errors or Application for application errors. Look for Error in =
the Type column and double click on Error to reveal a Description of the =
error. This can be copied by using Clipboard Viewer (see later).
=20
2. Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you =
should double click for further information and you can copy using copy =
and paste.
http://go.microsoft.com/fw.link/events.asp
(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)
3. For some errors you will find "+ Related Knowledge Base Article", =
which if double clicked takes you to the Knowledge Base Article =
containing a suggested solution.
There always seems to be a step 2 but not always a step 3.=20
A tip for posting copies of Error Reports (Step 1). Run Event Viewer and =
double click on the error you want to copy. In the window which appears =
is a button resembling two pages. Double click the button and close =
Event Viewer. Now start your message ( email )and do a paste into the =
body of the message. This will paste the info from the Event Viewer =
Error Report complete with links into the message. Make sure this is the =
first paste after exiting from Event Viewer. It can be helpful to place =
a shortcut to Event Viewer on your Desktop.
HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=3Dkb;en-us;308427
Download Adaware from http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/ and =
use it to remove parasites.
How good is your housekeeping?
1. In Outlook Express empty your Deleted Items folder.
2. In Outlook Express run File, Folder, Compact All whilst OFFLINE.
3. Run Disk Cleanup for each drive / partition.
4. Run Disk Defragmenter.=20

Hope this helps.

Application programs don't care what file system they run on, and
using NTFS instead of FAT32 won't stop your older programs from
running. The only common exception to that is disk utilities,
which *do* care.

Hi Gerry, thanks for the reply.
I checked 811493 in the Registry ands it the correct date for the new patch so that doesn't seem to
be the problem. am glad as i have removed the old patch delete info.
Bootvis not applicable? as Xp loads fine.
I Checked the Event Viewer, Perflib was listed as source for all four errors and were spread out
over a week.no errors were reported at time of slow program launch,Four errors that i have in the
event viewer are listed below.
The timeout waiting for the performance data collection function "PerfNet" in the
"C:\WINDOWS\System32\perfnet.dll" Library to finish has expired. There may be a problem with this
extensible counter or the service it is collecting data from or the system may have been very busy
when this call was attempted.
Description:
Performance counter data collection from the "PerfOS" service has been disabled due to one or more
errors generated by the performance counter library for that service. The error(s) that forced this
action have been written to the application event log. The error(s) should be corrected before the
performance counters for this service are enabled again.
The timeout waiting for the performance data collection function "RSVP" in the
"C:\WINDOWS\System32\rsvpperf.dll" Library to finish has expired. There may be a problem with this
extensible counter or the service it is collecting data from or the system may have been very busy
when this call was attempted.
The timeout waiting for the performance data collection function ".NET CLR Data" in the
"C:\WINDOWS\System32\netfxperf.dll" Library to finish has expired. There may be a problem with this
extensible counter or the service it is collecting data from or the system may have been very busy
when this call was attempted.
I tried going to MS link on the event errors, but just canned message with no help.
"We're sorry
There is no additional information about this issue in the Error and Event Log Messages or Knowledge
Base databases at this time. " Anyone Else want a stab at this?

To all who see this thread. Please be advised someone is spoofing
properties of several individuals including myself and posting through the
web interface in an attempt to avoid detection.
If right click a header and select properties, if you see "CDO" in the
properties, that is an indication it came from the web interface. As I
mentioned about Chris in this thread, I don't post through the web interface
either. The post in this thread using my name and signature and chastising
Chris Holden is a fraud.

Tough talk for an anonymous poster, Jack.
If they don't understand it they can ask. Unfortunately, the properties on
the web interface aren't revealing of anything, but those who read the
groups using a newsreader can easily figure it out even if they don't have
your permission.

You make me laugh, Mikey. YOU taught me how to remain anonymous and protect my identity from hackers and the like, and now I'm using that to mess with you a little bit. I'm sure your blood is boiling. And I live in Bellevue, so if you really want my addres
s, I'll kick your teeth in. C-ya.
Michael Solomon \(MS-MVP Windows Shell/User\)
February 6th 04, 05:41 AM
I don't think so, Jack and my blood is not boiling. But whatever your
opinion of Chris Holden, we can't have people making fraudulent posts on
these boards as they disrupt and distract as well as call into question the
legitimate posts.
You got the wrong impression, Jack. I'm glad I was able to help you post
anonymously if that is the case but its not something to be used for the
wrong purpose or abused and I think you understand that.
If you read these boards regularly, you know I help a lot of people and I do
so non-judgmentally and without attitude.
Hmm, you'll kick my teeth in...don't you think that's a little beneath you
as is your purposefully snide and sarcastic use of my name, Jack; it
certainly is for me.

Michael, I knew it wasn't you or Chris in some of the posts in this thread
but others reading through CDO (the web interface) may not have known. Now
that you've posted the alert in this thread, they'll know too.
