Hello,
I'm wondering is anyone knows if the current round of devices likes external hard drives and tape
backup machines that use a USB port will continue to work in future versions of Windows?
The reason that I'm asking is because I have an external tape backup machine that only connects via
the parallel port and won't work under Windows 2000. I really would like to buy another external
tape backup machine (USB this time), but fear that in future versions of Windows, it won't work
anymore.
Thanks
Indera

My hunch is that the parallel port machine can be made to work with
Windows 2000. It could be that you just need to update the driver
(check the manufacturer's web site), or maybe you need to ensure
permissions on the port and software are setup properly.
But if you do buy a new one, you can expect USB to work for a long time
indeed (as does the parallel port machine you have now, so don't give
ups so easily).

hi again eugene,
i looked a while ago, but couldn't find the drivers. i have an iomega ditto max 10 GB tape backup
machine.
at some point, iomega sold this particular product to another company, whose name i have completely
forgotten, but when i checked the new companies site, it said that they didn't make any new drivers,
but who knows, you may have better luck than i did.
as i'm getting a new laptop at some point, it will come with windows xp, it would be great if the
tape backup machine worked on that laptop instead of the current one.
thanks

hi again rob,
it's not that i gave up (that's why i didn't run out and buy a new one yet - smile), i looked everywhere
that anyone suggested to find the drivers for the iomega ditto max 10 gb tape backup machine, but had no
luck. for whatever reason, i prefer tape backups to the external hard drive that i have.
i don't know that much about setting up permissions in general, never mind setting them up on the port.
if you have any suggestions, i'll gladly give them a whirl.
thanks

At http://www.iomega.com/software/dittodrivers.html it says:
"Since the Ditto drive is no longer being developed or manufactured by
Iomega, backup software is not available for the following operating
systems:
* Windows® 2000
* Windows Me
* Windows CE
* Windows XP
* Macintosh®
* Linux®"
Sounds like you are in the market for a new drive!!

Not the Printer Port or the USB port problem but hardware drivers for the
old hardware. Better question is will the hardware vendor support their
hardware. The drivers are the solutions.
