View Full Version : Windows XP (Home Edition) won't Boot up

I recently did a "system restore" to an earlier date as
one of the programmes on my computer stopped working
properly and simply removing the software and reinstalling
it did not help. However, after the "restore" the
computer would not boot up. I kept getting a blue screen
with a message about a corrupt file. I tried to repair
the operating system using the Windows XP CD.

Now my computer begins to boot up, the windows XP logo
appears then after about 30 seconds the screen goes black
and the computer shuts down. Then it begins to re-boot up
again and the cycle continues over and over. (I have
Norton Antivirus and Firewall installed on the machine, I
don't know if this is of any relevance?)

Anybody know what I can do to fix this? I'm not a
computer expert, just a home user, (so replies in simple
english please)

Can you boot into Safe Mode? Hold down the F8 key when the system reboots
and you should get to a black screen titled Advanced Boot Menu. Select "Safe
Mode" and press the Enter key. Hopefully you can boot into the Desktop. Tell
us if this works. If so disable the antivirus and then try running the
Repair Installation again using the instructions here
