View Full Version : XP won't detect my scanner

Hello, I have a problem with my scanner - an UMAX Astra 610P. I have
recently reformatted my hard drive and upgraded to Win XP, and everything
else seems to work fine, but when I tried to connect and reinstall my
scanner, it seems to be invisible, even though everything is hooked up (it
connects to the LPT1 port). The driver seems to be installed - the scanner
shows up under Imaging Devices in the Device Manager, but when I try to
access it, it comes up that the scanner is not detected. I've tried deleting
and reinstalling drivers with the hardware wizard, but that doesn't work
either. I also tried installing the original software it came with - but
that won't recognize it either. I really don't want to buy a new scanner if
I can avoid it, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you :-)

Look for an XP compatible driver for your scanner.

And see the umax site for FAQ's on problems using LPT

I checked out Umax's website, but couldn't find anything - do you have the
specific URL? I also tried to search for new drivers, but couldn't find
anything - I think that there is a driver present since it is listed in my
Device Manager.

You must download the latest driver from the UMAX website. With the scanner
NOT connected install the drivers, reboot and then attach the scanner. If
you can't even find the drivers on the UMAX site, then perhaps you should
find someone with a little more skill than you have to help.

Umax has no drivers for XP for my scanner. That's why I'm asking here if
anyone knows any other options. The last OS they have drivers for is Win 98.
It was the LPT response that I couldn't find on the Umax site.

If UMAX has not drivers, and it is an LPT scanner, it is time to retire it.
If you look hard enough, you can get a scanner that will give you better
results than your vintage one for less than 40 bucks.

http://www.umax.co.uk/support/default.htm
site states it uses default winxp driver.
Though I have to agree, a more upto date scanner may give better output, but
I guess it depends on what you need.

I have seen similar problems with other scanners under WinXP.
WinXP has a way of communicating with scanners called WIA (Windows Image
Acquisition). Most scanners have drivers named TWAIN, and newer ones also are
WIA aware. WIA is supposed to have a compatibility layer to allow for TWAIN
connected devices, but sometimes this seems to conflict with the native
drivers for the scanner - sometimes it is hard to avoid installing these, as
they are put in along with other software that comes with the scanner.

I have had some success by setting the WIA service to disabled, so that it
does not run. This may make other devices like cameras that you may have stop
working, though (unless they also have a TWAIN driver).

Have a look on Google for "WIA TWAIN" (no quotes) - you will get lots of
matches to look at.

Thank you for your kind help everyone. I actually found a website that had
driver software that finally made it work - www.scanner-drivers.com - it had
an up to date version of the Vista Scan software for my scanner, and it works
like a charm now. I find it odd that I couldn't find it on the Umax site - I
was looking on the US Umax site which had even less info on it than the UK
one DL supplied. Oh well.

Thank you again
Marlis
